I still use the
marbled portfolio book
my parents brought back
from Paris when
I was 14 or so.

it was the most
beautiful & elegant
object i had ever seen
so I carried it everyday,
to school, under my arm.

there is something
about tying 3 bows that
makes everything inside
feel a bit more precious.

it makes me
proud of my work

which is quite
a triumph as I'm
very self-conscious
about the things
I create.

ps:

when you were
young did you have
a special object that felt
different from the rest?

one that made
you imagine things,
romanticize another time,
another life, or enlivened
the everyday.

nonviolence

is not
passive

it's a force
more powerful

gene sharp on
npr this morning

gene's books on
nonviolence truly
changed my life.

as the gulf protests
continue to spread
across the region

my thoughts will
be with the libyans.

we have yet to fully
know the extent of
their national
genocide.

a force more
powerful

much like the
design process

bread is a mixture
of flour and water

that is transformed
into something through
the course of fermentation

that transcends
the simplicity of those
basic ingredients

owner steve marks
keeps it simple

grab a coke or beer
out of the cooler

explore the suitcase
of magazines

and get a cut

not so much
ephemera or dressings
to feel like every other
"too cool for school"
shop in brooklyn

but just enough to
take you back.

steve bought
the barbershop
from the former
owner, Sal, who
passed away at
80 this year

he kept Sal's original
mural and used it as
inspiration for the
"1970's" remodel

all in all,
its a very friendly place
which is quite a rarity when
you're looking for quality
in nyc these days

how I wish I was
a man with a face
to be shaven!

run as erect as possible

weekly wisdom
from graphic designer
steve edge:

dress in
your sunday best

and the party
will come to you.

my mother
told me the same
thing when I was
growing up.

and to put
my shoulders
back!

whenever I see her
she still tries to adjust
my shoulders to fix
my posture.

poise makes
an impression

and once you learn it
it eventually comes from within;
on your own terms.

what simple/parental
life lessons do you
still carry today?
